Health Occupations - Overview

Nursing Assistant Course

The Nursing Assistant Course is a 144 hour program divided into 54 hours of theory and 90 hours of clinical experience.  Nursing assistants provide direct care to clients in a variety of health care settings under the supervision of the Professional Nurse.  This is a fast paced comprehensive program that prepares students as entry-level members of the nursing team. The Nursing Assistant curriculum progresses from the simple to complex and includes opportunities for the student to acquire knowledge, skills and self direction and an appreciation for the multidimensional nature and holistic view of persons, community and society in order to function effectively in their roles. This Health Occupations Program provides the student with foundations upon which additional education may be built for the purpose of career mobility.

The course begins with the student in the classroom setting to learn basic nursing theory. Basic nursing care procedures, body mechanics and safety techniques are taught in the classroom and practiced in concurrent lab sessions. Scope of practice, professionalism and effective communication skills are incorporated into the curriculum, including long term care facilities, St. Joseph Hospital, Adult Day Health Center, Home Care, assisted living facilities and Hospice House.  All clinical experience is under the supervision of a program instructor.

Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant Course, graduates are eligible to take the New Hampshire licensure exam that is administered at the School and are also responsible for the licensure fee charged by the state.  Students should review the NH Board of Nursing web site for all licensure requirements.
